Plastic bags

Today when we went to buy food I noticed an other difference between Malaysia and Finland: plastic bags. What ever you buy here you get a very small plastic bag in different colours. I don´t really see the usefulness with them. Often they are so small so you can´t use them as garbagebag or something else. And if it´s a little thing you have bought then you don´t need to carry it in a bag, you can just use your hands.
In Finland we normally take a textile bag with us to the store so we not have to buy or use plastic bags.

I give you all a challenge: 1 week without any plastic bags! Try and see if it´s possible for you and let me know how it went.

Plastic bags are not a part of the environment, so be careful what you do with them!

Caroline

Interns from France and Finland

Hi everybody!

We are Raphaël from France and Caroline from Finland. We are proud to be in Malaysia for STEP program and be facilitators at GaS (Green agent Summit).

During the Global village (next Wednesday) we will show you more about our culture, but you can also follow us in this blog, at least we will try to update it every day.

We did and will do some workshops in some schools around Johor Bahru and we really hope
that you enjoy them if you are students!

Today it's not even one week until the GaS starts. Can't wait to meet you all students,
facilitators and OC's, it gonna be awesome! :)

Regards,
Raphaël and Caroline

The knowledge is a weapon

What should we do to protect the environment?

Whether the Earth warms or cools in the near future, we have to act. Some of the actions we can do make sense in their own right and will be important. In the distant future it is a certainty that the Earth will warm beyond what we have today and that the next ice age is waiting in the wings. If we are concerned about global warming, a guiding principle is to do things which protect the environment and allow us to save money. Overall, we should aim to reduce our living expenses, while at the same time we are "cleaning up our act".

What should we do now? See ways to improve ENERGY EFFICIENCY and ENERGY SOURCES.

There is only one way to check. Look at your household energy consumption. It is reasonable to have it drop one percent every two years for as long as you have been in your house, just from household maintenance, appliance replacement and replacing light bulbs with fluorescents or LEDs when they burn out. All lights on timers, for example, should be fluorescents. Do we adjust the thermostat for when nobody is home? Is our shower just a little too long? We have to ask the good questions…
